It has more than 600 hectares of own cultivation area, with vineyards in a permanent process of renewal and reconversion.

A high requirement for the quality of the grape is defined, a meticulous analysis and choice of the plots is made in terms of the nature of the soil, relief, sun exposure, the varieties used and other technical procedures for intervention in the plant during the production of the fruit. .

The selection of grape varieties that support the Foundation’s wine production results from the combination of the vast experience acquired and the scientific information available today. The choice of consecrated and recommended Alentejo grape varieties for the Denomination of Controlled Origin Alentejo, sub-region of Évora, has been fundamental in the creation of wines. The white wines mainly use recognized Alentejo varieties such as Roupeiro, Antão Vaz and Arinto, while the red wines are obtained from traditional varieties such as Trincadeira, Aragonês and Castelão. In a residual part, less traditional but equally qualitative varieties are also used.

Each vineyard plot is treated and worked individually throughout the year according to age, grape variety or soil characteristics, always bearing in mind the specific wine for which it is intended. The grape harvest is mostly done in daytime manual harvesting.

The winery
About six million bottles are produced annually from the fully automated bottling line installed at Adega Cartuxa, distributed among white, rosé and red wines under the Vinea Cartuxa, EA, Foral de Évora, Cartuxa, Scala Coeli and Pêra-Manca brands.
Adega Cartuxa Monte de Pinheiros, located at Herdade de Pinheiros, allows you to receive all the grapes produced in the Foundation’s vineyards and has three technological premises that distinguish it from the others: refrigeration capacity; possibility of sorting the entire grape at the entrance to the cellar and handling and transfer of masses solely by gravity.
Of the previous equipment, now in disuse but innovative at the time they were introduced, there are still duly preserved examples, such as the Algerian amphorae for fermenting reds and the tanks where the fermentation of white wines took place. These storage tanks, built in cement, which were later coated with resin to nullify the porosity of the cement, date back to the 50s of the last century, a period in which their use was common practice.

The story
Behind Adega Cartuxa is a great family, the Eugénio de Almeida family. Let’s go back to 1913, the year Vasco Maria was born into one of the most influential families of the 19th century. Born in Lisbon, he soon established ties with Évora, where the family owned an extensive heritage. Vasco Maria always considered people as the most valuable variable around which he organized all his efforts. Of particular note was the revitalization of the wine industry and the commitment to planting a vast area of olive groves a few kilometers from Évora, which resulted in the wines and oils still produced today.
In order to give meaning to the legacy of his predecessors Vasco Maria Eugénio de Almeida created, in 1963, the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, to which he donated all his assets and left the mission of promoting the cultural, educational, social and spiritual development of the region of Évora. What allows the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation to fulfill its founder’s humanist dream, whether through carrying out projects and activities for the community, or through financial support to institutions and individuals, is mainly the production of wines and olive oils from Adega e Lagar Charterhouse.

[144,128,105
150
post-7765","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-white","product_cat-alentejo-en","product_cat-wines","product_tag-heritage-wines-en","first","outofstock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple
["GET
