THE WINE
Barca Velha is the epitome, the first unquestionable symbol of the highest quality of Douro wines. Classic, intense, complex, elegant and rich, adjectives are few to describe what is, since its creation in 1952, the most celebrated Portuguese wine. Barca Velha is the basis upon which formed the reputation of the House Ferreirinha, the specialist brand with the greatest quality tradition in the Douro and one of the world references. Barca Velha is declared only in truly exceptional years (17 in total, incl.2004).
TASTING NOTES
Barca Velha 2004 has an intense ruby ??color and an aroma of great harmony and complexity, with a strong presence of ripe berries, floral nuances of lavender and violet, and an excellent component of spices. In the mouth is large, has a lively and well integrated acidity, with well marked and excellent quality tannins. In the red fruit, which still reveals fresh, join spicy notes and balsamic. The finish is very long and complex, with a delicacy and simultaneous remarkable structure.
HARVEST YEAR
2004 was a hot, dry year. Although in the winter and spring have just rained, reducing the incidence of diseases, early September threatened an unfavorable health situation due to abnormally high rainfall in August (2nd wettest month of the year). Fortunately, conditions reversed with a very hot and dry harvest, which began in mid-September and lasting until the end of October, registering in the finals since heavy rains, but who ultimately did not affect the quality of the grapes sensitive, however harvested.

VINIFICATION
The hand-picked grapes for Barca Velha 2004 were vinified by variety or batch selected in the vineyard and / or on arrival at the winery Quinta da Leda. After full and soft crushing stalk, alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and robotic presses. During this period, it proceeded to pumping by the pump and “pigeages” with robot, temperature-controlled automatic system. It also conducted a lengthy maceration to obtain the desired polyphenol and aromatic extraction. In the end, and at the time required by each variety / lot, the wine was incubates and their masses pressed, and the resulting wine press kept apart from tear.
MATURITY
The wines were transported to V. N. Gaia shortly after the end of maceration, where after finishing fermentation underwent an internship in French oak barrels of 225 liters capacity, 75% new wood and 25% wood used for approximately 16 months. The final blend was based on the continued selection of the best wines resulting from the numerous tests and analyzes carried out during this period the different blends and barrels. To preserve its highest quality, Barca Velha 2004 was bottled without treatment, is therefore natural deposit formation.
SAVE
Although ready to drink right now, Barca Velha has a long potential for storage and a positive evolution in the bottle, as long as it is kept lie down in a cool dry place, away from light. The heyday? Perhaps 15-20 years after the vintage, is however to remain alive for a period yet undetermined.
SERVE
The bottle should be placed ‘on high’ overnight and opened 2 to 3 hours before serving. It must be carefully opened and decanted a few hours before being eaten. Serve between 16ºC-18ºC.
