Port Wine DOW’S Quinta Senhora da Ribeira Vintage 1998 – 1,5 Liters – Magnum
Tasting Notes
The Senhora da Ribeira 1998 features all the characteristic features of a classic Dow Vintage, with intense dark purple color, the nose, opulent floral notes of violets and roses. On the palate, it presents flavors of very ripe berries, with a remarkable balance, and a perfect mouth end provided by powerful and elegant tannins.
The Viticultural Year
After a cold, wet January across the Douro, followed suddenly an unusually hot, dry weather during the months of February and March. These conditions gave an early surf and, in late March, the shoots had reached 30 cm length.
During the month of April there were precipitation levels never achieved in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, disastrous for flowering and budding, which resulted in the smallest harvest in decades. On top of all this, frosts attacked the highlands in spring, reducing production further. The harvest in the vineyards were very scarce, with a reduction of 30% across the region and a production of less than 1 kg per vine in many cases. The wet weather continued throughout the month of May. In June, rainfall stood again at normal levels and between July and early September, there was a rise in temperature to between 29 ° C and 38 ° C in the Cima Corgo and 32 ° C to 39 ° C in Douro Superior, which provided a period of long, uninterrupted maturation.

“One of the most remarkable Port wines I’ve ever tasted, with a purple color
dark, aromas and intense flavors of red fruits, violets and roses and a superb finish. “
Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail, December 9, 2000
“… Certainly the most elegant, smooth and harmonious wine harvest.”
Richard Mayson, Decanter Magazine, June 2001
“A delightful and sweet red wine from the Douro.” “The real revelation of the lunch was a young Vintage Port wine so delicious that the guests, where they counted three more Masters of Wine, were totally fascinated … Loaded with flavors of fresh blueberries, so open and gently seductive as you can imagine, this wine is splendid to drink already and will continue probably for another year or more before collecting into his shell and eventually evolve from a ‘sweet red wine’ exquisite character for Wine Vintage Port adult. “
