Wine Marquês dos Vales Grande Escolha 2014 Red 75cl
Region: Estômbar – Algarve, Portugal
Winemaker: Paulo Laureano
Tasting notes:
A blend composed of noble grape varieties, with a deep ruby color and spice profile. On the nose there are also aromas of ripe black fruit, such as black plum and a slight herbaceous aroma. In the mouth, it is very complex, with good structure, rich tannins, very present acidity and a long, persistent and striking finish.
The terroir
When it comes to the secret of the perfect ingredients for a wine, we can boil it down to a few essential elements – the right soil and climate (a combination defined in wine circles as ‘terroir’), and careful and responsible handling by the winegrower. . The Algarve is located in a natural amphitheater, protected from the north winds by the Monchique mountains, resulting in a unique climate characterized by an average of more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year.
The soil, mostly limestone and clay, forces the vines to dig deeper into the soil, which is exactly what is needed to grow grapes in this type of terroir. Our proximity to the Atlantic Ocean ensures that, even on the hottest summer days, there is always a fresh breeze, which provides natural ventilation and temperature control in the vineyards. In combination with green pruning, winegrowers can define exactly which way a particular wine should go. The degree of green pruning will maximize sun exposure, resulting in opulent, fruity wines, while maximizing shade and fresh air circulation will result in fresher, more subtle wines.
